In Which the Past Just Won’t Die
After a terribly quiet 2023, it’s hard to believe the day is finally here. A Dead Man’s Favor is officially available! The fifth book in The Many Travails of John Smith finds John living his best life back in San Diego… free (more or less) from Lucia, working with Juliette, and finally getting to explore a relationship with the woman he loves. So, of course, it was my duty as an author to shake all of that up.
A special thank you to all of the alpha, beta, and ARC readers who helped make this book a reality: Claudia, Cory, Jamie, Johanna, Kerri, Mitch, Montie, Reid, Sam, Tom, Ziggy, my angel-wife, and–always last but never least–my parents.
As always, the magic of timezones means some of you received the book yesterday! It was fun to watch preorders being fulfilled all over the world as I counted down to the release here in the US. For those of you already reading, I hope you’re enjoying John’s latest misadventures! I certainly had a fabulous time writing them. For the rest of you, I’ve prepared the usual list of content warnings below. And in case you missed them, I shared the first five chapters of the book over the last few weeks, starting with A Dead Man’s Favor: Chapter 1.
If you’re new to the series and setting, you’ll likely want to start at the beginning with the first book: Investigation, Mediation, Vindication. This is very much a series that builds on what comes before. If you have read the series but can’t quite remember what happened, on account of my frustratingly slow release cadence, well, you’re in luck! A Dead Man’s Favor has a recap at the very start that should help get you situated.
Content Warnings
I post content warnings for all of my books so that readers have the information necessary to judge for themselves whether or not the text is suitable for them. If you’ve read the series’ first four books, you probably already know what to expect, but please give these a look anyway. As always, I try to avoid spoiling anything outright.
CW: death, undeath, violence, gore, bugs, undead, sexual language, profanity, alcohol usage, mental illness, mind control, nudity, kidnapping, imprisonment, dad jokes, etc.
This series is considerably lighter in tone than my other books, but bad thingsĀ do happen. If any of the above throws up a red flag for you, please think twice about reading A Dead Man’s Favor. Also, check out the sample chapters I’ve already shared to decide if the book is right for you! My goal with this and every book is to entertain… I’d genuinely much rather you not read something that I write1 than be upset or have some past trauma triggered by it.
Happy Reading!
And now, as usual, I’m going to go unplug and wait for the release day dust to settle. I hope you all enjoy the book! If you do, please spread the word to your friends, families, coworkers, worst enemies, childhood romances, and any kindly strangers you might encounter on the street. Also? Leave a review!
Happy September, everyone!

Newsletter? Newsletter!
If you’ve read this far, you’ve got gumption, kid. In fact, you’re just the kind of person that would make an awesome subscriber to my newsletter. Come join the fun!
And by fun, I mean “be alerted when new books are available.” If this site’s blog posts are my monthly, in-depth, fact-heavy shareholders’ reports, the newsletters are my far-less-frequent, carefully crafted pseudo-tweets, skipping all the nitty gritty to tell you what you actually want to know: what’s new and how you can get it.
I promise that I will never spam you… because spamming takes effort, and I am way, way too busy for that.
