As those of you who follow along on social media might already know, early copies of A Dead Man’s Favor went out to my sainted beta readers this past week. So far, the feedback has been great! We’ve identified the usual persistent typos (now fixed), discussed a few areas of potential confusion (now addressed), and reviewed the themes I tried to bake into this book. The goal, as always, is to make sure that the rest of you get the best possible version of the book, and I think we’re well on our way. There’s a reason all of these people show up in the acknowledgments… they do some seriously heavy lifting in helping me keep you all entertained!
So, what’s next?
Well, there are a lot of steps in actually releasing a book. Now that the page count is finalized, Jake is working on the cover for the print edition, complete with back cover blurb. As ever, I’ll do my best to time the release of the paperback1 to match the digitial release date of September 26, and as ever, Amazon’s processes won’t make it easy on me! If possible2, I’ll err on the side of the print copy releasing first. I’m also finishing up some of the front and back matter in the book (the aforementioned acknowledgments, the author’s note, etc.), while taking one last pass on the recap that starts the whole thing off3. Lastly, I should be receiving the PCIP block4 in the next week or so, and will integrate that as well.
I’ll also be doing my usual release-day countdown posts: sample chapters, a spoiler-free list of the book subtitles, and whatever else I can think of that seems like fun. In addition, I’ll soon be adding the entire series to Ingram Spark5, so that those of you who prefer not to buy from Amazon can still get the books by requesting them from your local bookstores. And last but not least, now that the book is done, I will reach out to Tantor about getting an audiobook version of it recorded for those of you who prefer to experience John’s misadventures that way.
There is a lot still to do, as always, but the finish line is in sight. I had a ton of fun with this book and I hope you all will too.
See you soon for the first of the release-day countdown posts!
Newsletter? Newsletter!
If you’ve read this far, you’ve got gumption, kid. In fact, you’re just the kind of person that would make an awesome subscriber to my newsletter. Come join the fun!
And by fun, I mean “be alerted when new books are available.” If this site’s blog posts are my monthly, in-depth, fact-heavy shareholders’ reports, the newsletters are my far-less-frequent, carefully crafted pseudo-tweets, skipping all the nitty gritty to tell you what you actually want to know: what’s new and how you can get it.
I promise I will never spam you… because spamming takes effort, and I am way, way too busy for that.
Footnotes
- Reminder: Amazon does not allow indie authors to set their paperbacks up for pre-order, which is why the print edition is not currently displayed on the store page. It will show up whenever the print edition is released. Sorry for the hassle!
- A lot depends on how fast Jake finishes the cover.
- That’s right! This time, there’s a recap! Because I can’t be the only one who reads so many books in a year that I’ve completely forgotten what happened in prior series!
- The little chunk of text on the copyright page that, while not strictly necessary, looks professional and makes it easier on US librarians to catalogue my books.
- Books 1-4 this coming week, book 5 on release
